WASP 121st ARW honors legacy of Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)
The 121st Air Refueling Wing held a ceremony here to dedicate one of their KC-135 Stratotankers to honor the legacy of WASP July 13, 2018. Lockbourne Air Force Base, which was renamed Rickenbacker AFB in 1974, was a training location for female pilots from October 17, 1943 to January 13 of 1944. 13 females became fully qualified test pilots on B-17 Flying Fortresses. The success of the WASP program proved that women could fly any aircraft and the impact of that would resonate for years to come.

Recruiter 121st ARW recruiter hits career milestone in record time
It was 2015 and then Tech. Sgt. Todd J. Parkison, a recruiter with the 121st Air Refueling Wing here, was at a training conference. He had only been a recruiter for about three years, but already had around 250 accessions. When he saw people on stage getting awards for 500 accessions, he said, “That is a goal that I want to achieve.” It typically takes recruiters 14 years to achieve 500 accessions, said Senior Master Sgt. Joshua Blakley, the recruiting and retention superintendent with the Ohio National Guard. Despite knowing this, Parkison said he wanted to achieve this goal sooner rather than later. Over the few years that followed, Parkison said he increased his yearly total accessions. Parkison was averaging about 77 accessions per year, which more than doubles the national average of 36, said Blakley. Just six years and nine months after graduating from recruiting school, Parkison achieved his goal and signed his 500th accession April 11 on base.

Construction 121st Air Refueling Wing prepares for new flight simulator
The construction project for a KC-135 flight simulator is well underway at the 121st Air Refueling Wing in Columbus, Ohio, as of March 4, 2018. The $4 million project, including design and construction, began in November of 2017 and is projected to be completed in June or July of this year. “The project includes a 2,500 square foot high-bay, with a 50 foot-high clear area, to allow for full motion of the simulator,” said Major Corey Thobe, 121st ARW Base Civil Engineer. “In addition, there is another 3,400 square feet of support space.” Thobe said the architect, engineer, contractors and sub-contractors all were local to the central and southwestern Ohio regions, keeping the construction spending in the Ohio economy. The flight simulator, projected to arrive in early 2019, will be paired with the existing refueling boom simulator and will greatly increase the 121st ARW’s training capacity. Not only will the 121st aircrews be able to maintain their proficiency at home, but the simulators will attract Airmen from all across the country to train in Columbus.
